The imaginary boyfriend
For a moment I'm afraid he arrives. Then I turn around, a strange omen, and he is there, perfect, smiling and nervous, as always. I feel faint with joy, I pretend not to feel any relief, and instead I wish I could touch nothing. But then he looks surprised my dress, I hope to please, know I'm not beautiful, I know that his eye is attracted to other women, but I try in every way, pathetically, to please him. A strange sadness comes over me, and then they are alone again, he has faded in the sun on a Sunday afternoon, I'm staying in a cafe to chase dreams and invent words that fill the spaces of his absence.
